The Meaning Within: The Story Behind the Song

I think many of us spend a great deal of our lives searching for answers. We scour the world for something that will explain why things happened the way they did, why someone hurt us, why we were treated badly or why we had to survive something we never would have chosen. We read books, ask questions, look for signs and sometimes spend years waiting for an explanation, convinced that if we could just understand the reason, we could finally make peace with the pain.

And I understand that. I have spent plenty of time searching too.

But in my experience, those reasons are often not something we are privy to. Sometimes the person who hurt us cannot explain their own behaviour. Sometimes the explanation we receive does not make anything feel better. And sometimes there simply is no answer that could ever make what happened make sense.

So where does that leave us?

For me, it has meant learning to ask a different question. Instead of only asking, “Why did this happen to me?” I have learned to ask, “What have I come to know about myself because I lived through it?”

Those are very different questions.

One keeps me searching for information I may never receive. The other invites me to notice something I might have overlooked while I was busy searching: the strength I drew upon, the resilience I discovered, the moments when some small part of me continued to believe there was more to my life than what had happened to me.

We can understand these things intellectually. We can tell ourselves we are strong, capable and worthy, and we can collect all sorts of reasons why those statements should be true. But there is a difference between knowing something as an idea and recognizing it in your own lived experience. Between being told you are resilient and looking back at a chapter you thought would destroy you and realizing, “Somehow, I found my way through.”

That kind of knowing feels different.

And sometimes it is quieter than we expect. Perhaps our strength was asking for help. Perhaps it was resting, leaving, starting again or simply getting through a day we did not know how to face. Perhaps what we discovered was that our worthiness had never actually disappeared, even when someone treated us as though we had none.

The pain did not make us worthy. But finding our way through it can help us recognize the worth that was there all along.

To me, those are the gifts our wounds can offer. The parts of ourselves we now know more intimately. The compassion we carry. The things we are no longer willing to abandon in ourselves. The wisdom we can bring into whatever comes next.

That does not mean the hurt was necessary or that we have to be grateful for being harmed. I do not need to call something destiny in order to find meaning in its aftermath. What happened can remain something I wish had never happened, and I can still treasure what I have come to understand about myself since.

Both can be true.

The Meaning Within grew from that distinction. I do not know that everything happens for a reason, but I believe we can find meaning in what we go through. And if we spend our whole lives waiting for that meaning to arrive as an explanation from somewhere outside us, we may overlook the wisdom that has been quietly taking shape within us all along.

While the final recording was produced with the help of generative AI technology, the lyrics, melodies and concepts are entirely my own. The technology helped me bring the song I could already hear inside my head into a form I could finally share.

The Meaning Within

[Verse 1]

Sometimes life can be unkind
Sometimes pain is all we’ve got
Sometimes all the hardship and the silence
Create wounds and tiny knots

Sometimes choice is taken from us
Sometimes we don’t choose the road
Sometimes we are merely hanging on by a thread
Barely finding strength to float

[Pre-Chorus]

But in the stillness of the darkness
When nothing feels quite right
When all the hoping and the wishing
Have removed all hope from sight

There still remains some wisdom
Something easy for us to miss
Finding meaning in the pain
Might be its final gift

[Chorus]

We are here for just an instant
A mere blink in space and time
Always waiting, always watching
For some guidance divine

But maybe what we’re seeking
Isn’t whispered on the wind
Maybe the meaning that we seek
Has to come from within

[Verse 2]

Sometimes there is no reason
Sometimes there is no rhyme
Sometimes what has happened
Cannot be made right with time

But we decide what follows
What we carry, what we cast
We may not have chosen the breaking
But we choose what grows from that

[Pre-Chorus]

’Cause in the stillness of the darkness
When nothing feels quite right
We can stop awaiting answers
From somewhere beyond our sight

There still remains an option
When no reason can be found
We can take what tried to break us
And choose what happens now

[Bridge]
I will never call it destiny
I won’t say it had to be
But I can choose what I will carry
And what it becomes in me

I can honour what was taken
Without letting sorrow win
I may never find the reason
But I’ll find the meaning within

[Chorus]

We are here for just an instant
A mere blink in space and time
Always waiting, always watching
For some guidance divine

But maybe what we’re seeking
Isn’t whispered on the wind
Maybe the meaning that we seek
Has to come from within
