Kaleidoscope: The Story Behind The Song

I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to figure out who I am.

Not what I do. Not the roles I play or the labels I carry. But who I actually am underneath all of it.

And the older I get, the more I realize that maybe the problem was never that I couldn’t find the answer.

Maybe there isn’t just one.

I can be strong and still need help. Confident and uncertain. Fiercely independent and deeply connected. I can love being seen and sometimes want to disappear. I can be all-in and still have questions. I can be the person I was ten years ago, the person I am today, and someone I haven’t even met yet.

None of those things cancels out the others.

They’re all me. That’s where Kaleidoscope came from.

A kaleidoscope contains the same pieces every time you look through it. But turn it slightly toward the light and suddenly you see something completely different.

A new pattern.
A new configuration.

Something that was there all along, but couldn’t be seen from the angle you were looking from before. And I think people are like that.

We are so quick to decide that we “know” someone. Sometimes we even do it to ourselves. We take one version, one moment, one choice, one contradiction and decide *this is who I am.*

But we are so much bigger than any single view of us.

Every contradiction.
Every fracture.
Every version we have ever been.

Every version we are still becoming. Same pieces. Different little twist.

And every one is right. ❤️

This is Kaleidoscope.

While the final recording was produced with the help of generative AI technology, the lyrics, melodies and concepts are entirely my own. The technology helped me bring the song I could already hear inside my head into a form I could finally share.

Kaleidoscope Lyrics

You ask me who I am
Like there’s an answer I should know
Something I could hand you
Wrapped up neatly with a bow

But every truth I tell you
Is a window, not the view
Turn me slightly toward the sunlight
And I’ll become something new

Every contradiction
Every yes inside a no
Every person I have ever been
Is every part you think you know

But if you look again
You can see what you have missed
All the same pieces
With a different little twist

[Chorus]
I’m a kaleidoscope
Turn me toward the light
A thousand different versions
And every one is right

I’m a kaleidoscope
There’s no single way to see
Every colour, every fracture
Is another part of me

I’m a kaleidoscope (oh, oh, oh, oh...)

[Verse 2]
I bet you think you know me
Recognize me upon sight
But every fragment in me
Is a piece reflecting light

You tell me that you see me
That there’s nothing left to hide
But take another look
And you’ll see another side

Every room you think you’ve entered
Every world you’ve yet to find
Every time you think you know me
There is more hidden out of sight

But if you look again
You can see what you have missed
All the same pieces
With a different little twist

[Chorus]
I’m a kaleidoscope
Turn me toward the light
A thousand different versions
And every one is right

I’m a kaleidoscope
There’s no single way to see
Every colour, every fracture
Is another part of me

I’m a kaleidoscope (oh, oh, oh, oh...)

[Verse 3]
You think the story’s finished
Like every piece has found its place
Like every shifting pattern
Has been locked inside a frame

But every turn that moves me
Shows a shape you’ve never known
There are colours you’ve imagined
That you haven’t seen unfold

You tell me that you get me
That you’ve traced my every line
But there are hidden constellations
In the corners of my mind

So if you look again
You can see what you have missed
All the same pieces
With a different little twist

[Final Chorus]
I’m a kaleidoscope
Turn me toward the light
A thousand different versions
And every one is right

I’m a kaleidoscope
There’s no single way to see
Every colour, every fracture
Is another part of me

I’m a kaleidoscope (oh, oh, oh, oh...)
